Match Report

An exciting game with some peculiar moments. Rennais' key man, Gaston Ramirez, established control of the game early, picking passes well and linking up with frontman Long to set up the first goal and put Stade ahead. A series of peculiar moments followed, and Stade fans would have been forgiven for thinking that it wasnt to be their day again.

First, a speculative effort from Vecino forced a strong parry from Stekelenberg, who could only watch in dismay as three defenders stood and stared at Vecino, who followed up his shot by chasing into the box and slotting into a gaping net. Celta had pulled level.

Shortly after, a powerful but somewhat wayward shot from 25 yards was struck, again by Vecino. As it headed wide defender Darikwa threw himself at the ball. It struck him straight in the gut, wrongfooted the keeper, and careered into the bottom corner. In bizarre fashion, Vecino had pulled his team into the lead.

Celta looked to be heading to the break in the lead but on the stroke of halftime Ramirez found Shane Long again with a ball in behind the defence. Long was first to the pass and cooly slotted home to make the score 2-2 at half time.

An exciting second half followed, both teams left plenty of space in midfield as they opted to exchange attacks in a free flowing game. On 75 minutes, as the game looked like it may be heading to a draw, Shane Long played a short chipped pass to Jonny Howson on the edge of the box. Howson hit the ball first time, fizzing a low half volley in at the near post to put Rennes ahead for a second time.

Celta came close to equalising immediately as a goalmouth scramble developed after an attacking corner, with Stade just about managing to clear. Rennes counter attacked and won a corner. A defensive header at the near post only managed to make its way to Shane Long, 5 yards from goal, who duly hooked in the volley to complete his hat trick and break Vigo hearts.

Well played SamCro, good game, best of luck for the season.
