Written by

We now have a opportunity to look at who is who inside the champion St. Etienne squad. The team struggled at the start of the competition, but gradually and step by step managed to secure their first Premier league title. St. Etienne has been active with their current manager Mukremin for 2 seasons now, Mukremin has been active along the sidelines for a while and previously coaching Dynamo Kiev, Besiktas, Vitesse and current team St. Etienne.

Mukremin, aka Muk, Mukkie, who is of Turkish origin himself, has been criticized  by the French supporters for attracting too many Turkish players instead of French players. Last season saw a major change with more and more African players streaming in.

The bulk of the successful squad still consists of Ghanaian and Turkish players, other nationalities include Belgium, Netherlands, Nigeria, France, Switzerland, Congo and a lonely lost, only South-American player from Brazil.

Here follows a list of the stars from the St. Etienne squad:

Goal Keeper - Ali Ahamada
St. Etienne has been struggling to attract a good goalkeeper, Ahamada has been criticized by fans for conceding too easy goals and his lack of leadership. Fans claim that the attackers were responsible for making the team champion by scoring more than Ahamada conceding. Mukremin has been looking for replacements for him, few week ago rumors were there about a deal involving Akinfeev. No comment on this so far. Will Ahamada perform better this year?

Central Defender - Semih Kaya
Mukremin calls this talented defender, my son. Since his signing last season he has been the number one defender in St. Etienne. Fast and agile, solid in defending and heading. Has been on the transfer list of many managers on PEN.

Right Back - Gökhan Gönül
The work horse on the right flank, high stamina and work rate has made him a first choice of the manager. Good both at defending and attacking, he promises another good season.

Left back/midfield - Caner Erkin
Having been named the crown jewel of Mukremin, taking him over from Fenerbahce. He too had a good season with several assist, but with the coming of van Aanholt he might lose his left back position.

Defending Midfield - Mulumbu
Mulumbu has been working with Mukremin for several years now, he too was one of the originals at Vitesse when he was transferred to St. Etienne with several other players. Not played many games, but nonetheless played some excellent games and served as a shadow central defender. Likely to see more of him with the possible transfer of Fellaini to Fiorentina.

Central Midfield - Fellaini
A newcomer at the second half of the last season, he steadily moved to be a first squad player scoring and making assists. Likely to leave France for an adventure in Italy, he has been in talks with several other teams and claimed not to be happy in France. In his last interview he claimed that coach Mukremin acts like a dictator at training.

M. Wakaso, Atsu, Wijnaldum
Above 3 players, Wakaso, Atsu and Wijnaldum has been called the three aces by the several international sport papers. With their skills, speed and agility they caused havoc and chaos among the defense of opposing teams. All three have been a popular face for the fans and opposing fans alike.

Atsu and Wijnaldum all rejected rumors of a possible leave, Wakaso however didn't deny and left a door open to other adventures in Spain or England.

And now the absolute star of the French side, loved by the fans. His shirt, with number 3 supposedly sold more than 100.000 pieces which is a club record.

Striker - Asamoah Gyan
He is the number 1 goal machine of St. Etienne, having scored more than 25 goals last season. His transfer was mentioned as one of the worst transfers ever, it involved a deal for Burak Yilmaz who had a great run.
