Goal Of the Month - November

Written by

Season 10 is upon us and with it returns Goal of the Month! That's right, after 18 fantastic goals and a closely contested poll, it gives me great pleasure to present you with November's winner: Cloughy takes the gong for Leroy Sane's strike against Brentford which secured a vital point for Leeds in the 1-1 League encounter. I caught up with Cloughy recently who took time out of Leeds' busy festive schedule to talk to us about cuts, cups and membership clubs - enjoy!

First up - congratulations on a terrific goal! Leroy Sane seems to be finding his feet at Leeds - but I understand that you've had to experiment with his position to get he best out of him, tell us about it:

Well Leroy came to us as a bit of an enigma. The first thing people spot about him is his 70s throwback haircut, the second thing is his ridiculous pace. The kid is absolutely electric so like any pacey player he gets shoved out wide from an early age. It wasn't really working for him out there as he was getting abused by fullbacks so we gave him a run in attacking midfield when we were short of numbers and he has been a revelation. He has 6 goals and 5 assists from 14 games in midfield and that's where we plan on playing him despite it dropping his OVR

To the goal then, I'll let you talk us through it:

Well, it seems a long time to cast my memory back now but the strike itself was as clear as day. It was against Cartesian away from home who has started life in PEN fantastically well, people have even spoken about him being given an automatic spot in the Premiership after playing friendlies against him. I was a goal behind early in the game and was starting to apply the pressure when out of nowhere Sane creamed a shot with the outside of his boot from 25 yards and smashed the ball into the back of the net with a thud off the underside of the cross bar on the way. The game ended in a draw and if it wasn't for that piece of magic to bring us level we might not have come away with anything.

Is it the best goal you have scored, where would it rank against some of your other great strikes?

Tough to call, I've had some fantastic players at the club who have scored some beautiful goals. Rakitic, Hamouma, Markovic have all had some belters. I'd have to say this was worthy of the top 5 though, at least.

Leeds seem to be finding some form - with the Christmas schedule upon us what can we expect from the Peacocks?

Well its been a torrid start to the league campaign for me, with only 3 wins out of 13, 4 draws and 6 losses. We look more like relegation candidates than promotion contenders but we are a historically slow starting team and I hope that's the case again here. It took me several more games to reach this points total last season and I finished with 15 wins out of the last 18 games so I hope to pull the same rabbit out of the hat this year and get in to the play-offs. Many other managers seem to be performing well too so it's all about who has staying power. All we can control is our own performances and we are confident that they're heading in the right direction.

At the time of this interview Leeds are also challenging on the Cup front; following a dominant display in the last round the semis beckon, can Leeds go all the way?

Well we are now through to the final. So, I read - Congratulations! A 3rd consecutive 2-1 win (Cartesian5th, Sunzibad, Janguv) has got us there - you've got to enjoy the occasion and it's exactly what we're doing! I've told the boys that it's a short career and you have to make the most when you get to a final. I'll be ready with my headset on, pad in hand and Spice Boys white suit on all ready to go. Interestingly, we have been given the away team's changing room despite qualifying first which suits us down to the ground as we have yet to play at home in the cup!

Away from the pitch, a member of the 100+ club two seasons running serves to cement your reputation as a prolific trader in the market but fans are becoming used to watching a settled Leeds side most weeks; can you foresee a third successive season of 100+ transfers?

I would expect so! We currently don't have any strikers at the club so there will be movement on that front and we have a lot of quality sat on our bench too so those lads will need to break into the team or look to find a new club to make wages sustainable. We are currently around the 70 transfer mark and with half the season to go I would be surprised not to get my 3rd consecutive members badge at the 100+ club.

As 2016 draws to a close how has your year been - can you give us a quick breakdown of the highs, lows, the good, the bad, the ugly and anything you would have done differently if given the chance:

It's been a good year, in early 2016 we won the season 8 D2 title on the last day of the season and managed to keep our division 1 status in season 9 after a shaky start. We won the Kitchencup in season 9 against a strong DJTruckstop team in the final to add our second piece of major silverware. As 2016 draws to a close we have to look at being more professional as a club and stop trying to treat every game like Fifa Street, whilst working to ensure that we pick up points earlier in our campaigns to push on for more silverware.

Thanks Cloughy - best of luck with the League and Cup run; it promises to be an intriguing 2017, especially if Sane and co continue to produce goals like this!

There you have it folks - Leroy's inSANE (sorry, I had to) strike is your winner for November. Congratulations once again to Cloughy and from us all here at PEN towers, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
