New Captain for Catalan Giants

Written by Bluebird

This week saw a whole host of Free Agents up for grabs a week before the much anticipated Deadline Day! There were some tasty players on show including Fernando Torres, Ashley Williams and Oxlade-Chamberlain! But it was the Belgian centre mid Steven Defour that caught Barcelona's eye the most as he was a perfect fit for their midfield.

Having played under manager Bluebird previously for Cardiff City, the Welshman knew exactly what he would be getting if he managed to beat off interest from all the other managers. Barcelona certainly had the funds to compete with everyone else for Defours signature, but not knowing how much everyone else had bid it made it difficult to know how much to offer. In the end a bid of £35.6m was successful in capturing the Belgian international with the next highest bid coming from Everton manager Blueyboy with a £32m offer.

We caught up with Defour the day after the announcement that Barcelona had won the auction:

"Once I heard that Bluebird wanted me at Barcelona I didn't want to speak to any other club. I have played under him previously so know how ambitious he is in wanting to get promoted to the Premier League and hopefully I can do that.
We still have 2 league games left to secure a play off spot and hopefully win promotion and I will do my best to make sure that happens. We have a great squad here and I can't wait to play along side some of the brilliant player like Sarabia, Sala and my fellow CMF Gunnarsson.

I participated in a training session yesterday and we are looking strong going in to the final few games of the season, I hope we can keep the momentum up and clinch the final promotion spot."

Here's what Bluebird had to say about Defour:

"Steven is an excellent box to box midfielder that doesn't stop all game long and will be the engine of the team. Along with a great range of passing to create chances further up the pitch he is also a great defensive midfielder with strong ball winning skills and positioning. He's exactly the type of player I was hoping to bring in on deadline day so I couldn't turn down this opportunity when it arose."

Going in to deadline day Barcelona will have £44m to spend on strengthening their attacking options on the wings as Defour's fellow countryman Theo Bongonda will be going on loan next season which will leave the Catalan giants short of attacking options.

It's going to be an exciting end to the season in Barcelona which will hopefully end up with promotion and a flurry of new signings on deadline day. Whatever happens I'm sure Defour will be instrumental to the end of their season.
